Jared was raised in Owings Mills, a suburb of Baltimore. After high school he came to the University of Maryland and received his bachelors degree in the spring of 2005. As an undergraduate student Jared was a member of the dodge ball club, racquetball club, and engineering student council. He served as the treasurer to the local chapter of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics and was inducted into Sigma Gamma Tau in 2004. Jared also worked as both a teaching assistant and an undergraduate research assistant. He has obtained his master’s degree and is currently pursuing a Ph.D in aerospace engineering.

Graduate Research

Title: Ornithopter Flight Dynamics and ControlJared with bird

As the development of the airplane and the helicopter progressed, the mechanisms and techniques for achieving controlled flight quickly diverged from the natural methods which once inspired their creation. We are able to fly sizeable payloads higher and faster than ever before and yet we cannot match the control, agility, and adaptability that birds exhibit every day. Jared is interested in starting this problem anew, using modern technologies. Specifically, he is interested in using avian flight as a guiding light in developing fully automated, highly agile, unmanned air vehicles which use flapping wings to achieve controlled flight.

Professional Objectives

To make a significant contribution to the field by modeling flapping flight vehicles and obtaining autonomous flight through feedback control.
