Greg Gremillion was awarded the L-3 Communications Graduate Fellowship for the 2010-2011 academic year. The proposed research, for which this was awarded, involves the identification of sensory models of flying insects and analyzing their effectiveness in reference to biological and non-biological flight platforms. In conjunction with physiological and behavioral experimentation at the Krapp Lab of Imperial College, London, he will quantify the observability of the sensory architectures of several species in concert with identified flight dynamics models of micro air vehicles and biological fliers, developed in the Autonomous Vehicle Lab (AVL) at Maryland. Greg's faculty advisor is Professor Sean Humbert, director of the AVL.

This award also entails participation in the annual ?L-3 @ Maryland? research day, providing interaction with experts in the field from L-3. The award is a $25,000 stipend, $1000 for conference travel, and a five-credit tuition waiver. Additional funds are also awarded to the faculty advisor and made available for an undergraduate researcher.

The fellowship is part of a $1,000,000 gift to the Clark School given in July. It supports five Ph.D. students from the Clark School each year.
