Department of Aerospace Engineering senior Jerry Liu was awarded a 2023 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.

Liu is completing a minor in Global Engineering Leadership and is in the Aerospace Engineering Honors Program, where his research focuses on developing scaling laws for pulsejet engines under the guidance of Professor Christopher Cadou.

Additionally, he has actively contributed to the Hybrid SOFC-Turbogenerator (REEACH) project where his role involved designing a pressurized test rig for solid oxide fuel cells, aiming to enhance their performance in gas turbines and reduce aviation carbon footprint. The project aims to develop a hybrid gas turbine/fuel cell system suitable for large aircraft like the Boeing 737.

Outside of academics, Liu holds FAA certifications as a private pilot and advanced ground instructor, and he enjoys taking friends and families on trips in small planes.

Following graduation this spring, Liu will attend Stanford University, where he will be working with Dr. Ron Hanson on aerospace propulsion and laser diagnostics. The NSF fellowship will provide valuable support for his graduate studies at Stanford University.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is the country’s oldest fellowship program that directly supports graduate students in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.
